“So, what is it that you do?”
It’s obvious, isn’t it? I bang on about it on social media, I talk to my clients about it, my friends and family hear me talk about work.
But do I really say it clearly and does anyone listen?
It’s become clear, even just recently, that there are people, including some close to me, that don’t really know what I do. There are several reasons for this, but mostly because I’m pretty crap about talking about it. I don’t bang my own drum and I think, that for the most part, my friends and family aren’t going to be all that interested in it anyway.
So, I’ve decided to write a little post that goes beyond the self-appointed job headline of Freelance Copywriter – Virtual Assistant – Toggl Master and uncovers, on a more practical level, what that looks like in terms of the type of work I do and for whom I do it.
It can be tricky if you’re providing a service rather than a tangible product, to demonstrate what you do via little snippets online or on social media. And if you’ve got several of those services to contend with (does that make me a multi-hyphenate, a multi-disciplined freelancer or dare I say “Slashie” *shudder*) where do you even start?
Well here it is, here I’m going to outline some of the things I do. Not just what they’re called or my job title that’s been self-assigned for each client, but what the work actually looks like.
What is a virtual assistant?
A virtual assistant is not a PA that works from home. Except they might be a PA that works from home, but they also might be a social media manager or a project coordinator or an editorial assistant. The term virtual assistant refers more to how they work than what they actually do.
How do I help my VA clients?
I prefer to work with clients in an ongoing situation, to build longer-term projects and provide continual support for them. At the moment, what that looks like day-to-day could involve a mix of some of the following tasks:
- Coordinating advertising sales
- Booking events
- Managing a membership community
- Creating and sending newsletters via MailChimp
- Updating a CRM
- Project management
- Responding to public and/or internal enquiries
- WordPress/CMS updates
- Maintaining an online presence on social media
Except it’s even more than that. If you go beyond the tasks, I’m here to help them, to provide the support that they can rely and that their customers/members/community can rely on. I’m part of the team.
What is a copywriter?
A copywriter is someone who writes words that sell your product or your idea, that’s the long and the short of it. Except, I’m not just a copywriter, I’m also a content writer. You can do both. If you can read it, then someone wrote it.
What do I write for my clients?
I write mostly website copy. That’s the stuff on the website pages, the “home” page, the “about” page, the “meet the team” page, the pages that describe what it is that you do in a way that makes people want to contact you or buy your product or service. I also write product descriptions, blog posts, social media posts and occasional words that go in brochures or on other promotional items.
I don’t have a particular industry that I work in either as a VA or a copywriter, I haven’t ‘niched down’. I am a generalist. That said, there are some fairly common themes where my clients are concerned: They like to make a difference and do things differently; they care about their cause and community; and they are not overly corporate nor are they cottage industry. They work rather than go to work, this could be from anywhere.
What is a Toggl Master?
I’m not going to tell you about that right here. Why not? Because for this I work closely with Toggl as one of their few certified consultants. If you’re interested in finding out more, you can read my blog post on Why I track my time and why you should too or head over to Toggl.
Whichever service I’m providing, when you work with me, you are hiring me as your assistant, your copywriter or your project coordinator…. If you have any questions about working with a freelance copywriter or virtual assistant, then feel free to contact me to find out more.
