Working with…
Dark Angels Writers
Continuing my ‘Working with…’ series, where I take a closer look at some of the work I do for individual clients, up next are Dark Angels Writers.
Dark Angels offer courses in Creative Writing for Business in the form of writing retreats and workshops – for writers of any kind.
Having worked for their MD Neil Baker on a few separate projects previously, I was approached by them in March 2018 to help with their course bookings and event coordination. They needed a central first port of call for enquiries, someone to keep on top of the details of the courses and generally provide admin support to the organisation as a whole.
“We first started to work with Susanne because we needed someone really organised and efficient to deal with admin around our courses. There’s a lot to coordinate – venues, transport, catering – and there’s a lot that can go wrong. She very quickly sorted us out. We’re not only more organised now, but we deliver a much better experience to our students, which is what really matters. The more we’ve worked together, the more we’ve realised how talented Susanne is. She’s brilliant at email marketing, social media and blogging – we used to have a database of contacts, now we have an engaged community. I still think we’re just scraping the surface of what Susanne could do for us. She’s an indispensable part of our team. We’d be lost without her.”
How I help
I help with everything involved in the course bookings and the student journey. This starts with responding to initial enquiries and confirming bookings, to helping with travel arrangements, through to liaising with the venues and tutors ahead of the course about any specific requirements and coordinating resources for the workshops.
I also support the organisation with their day-to-day general admin and with reaching their community by sending out their regular newsletter Notes, sharing snippets via social media and maintaining a database of students. With over 500 alumni, Dark Angels is very much a community rather than a company.

Their courses range from one-day workshops, to week-long retreats in inspiring locations, as well as online courses. Each workshop is designed to boast creativity through a series of writing exercises, to better understand the power of language, storytelling techniques, and what each individual can bring to their own writing.
Dark Angels started out in 2004 with their first course run by two tutors. Now, they are a collective of 12 writers and tutors and a community of over 500 students brought together by a shared belief in the power of words and personal connection.
